Case name:

Class action concerning Samsung electric ranges – Fire hazard recall due to defective knobs

Quebec Superior Court file #:

500-06-001331-244

What this class action is about:

Samsung advertises its electric ranges – that it sells for thousands of dollars – as “safe”, “stylish” and “modern”. In reality, some of these ranges are anything but.

On August 29, 2024, Health Canada issued a Recall title “Samsung Slide-In Electric Ranges recalled due to fire hazard” which you can read by clicking here. The Recall was issued because humans and pets can accidentally activate the front-mounted knobs on the Samsung ranges, posing a fire hazard. As of August 28, 2024, Samsung received over 57 reports of incidents in Canada, and 7 reports of injuries, as indicated in the Recall. Samsung has recalled more than 1.2 million ranges in Canada and the United States.

The Samsung ranges with model numbers listed in the Class description below were recalled.

Instead of offering its customers a refund or the option to replace their dangerous and defective ranges with non-defective and safe ranges, Samsung is simply providing customers (who make the request) “with a set of free knob locks or covers”. These knob locks/covers are cheap looking, bulky and an eyesore. The Plaintiff is asking for a full refund of the Samsung range he purchased less than 9 months ago for $2,300, as well as punitive damages and other damages for trouble and inconvenience.

Proposed Class:

All persons who, since 2013, purchased one or more of the of the following ranges recalled under Health Canada Identification # RA-75974 with defective front-mounted knobs that can accidentally activate, manufactured, distributed, supplied, wholesaled and/or imported by Samsung:
